April is Pet First Aid Awareness Month

Growing up, most of us knew where the first aid box was located. Band-Aids, antiseptic spray, pain relievers, and miscellaneous items were inside, along with gauze and wraps. April is pet first aid awareness month, and your pet needs its own box, too! Check out the key things to consider when learning about first aid for your pet.

Watch around your house for items that could cause accidental injury, choking, or poisoning to your pet. It’s wise to pick up small objects that your animals might see as toys, which could get stuck in their throats. Additionally, some cleaning chemicals can be highly toxic to animals, so keep a list of potential hazards nearby and store those supplies safely.

Keep your first aid kit stocked and ready! It should include absorbent gauze pads, adhesive tape, tweezers, disposable gloves, and cotton balls or swabs. While supplies are important, it’s just as crucial to know emergency procedures, such as the Heimlich maneuver and CPR. Ask your veterinarian how to properly perform these on your pet so you’re always prepared.

If your pet does sustain an injury, be careful when handling them. Even if your animal is normally the kindest, most gentle creature when not in pain, it doesn’t mean they’ll remain as kind when they are hurting. Avoid getting too close to their face by hugging or comforting them, as this might increase their fear. Slowly assess the injury and, if possible, wrap any wounds before moving your pet. Finally, call the emergency animal hospital or your vet if needed, and let them know you’re on your way and what injuries they can expect. By alerting the facility, they’ll be prepared to assist you when you arrive.

By knowing prevention methods and first aid tips, you’ll be well-prepared to handle emergencies or injuries involving your pet. And, as always, prevention is the best medicine. Keep the names and numbers of family members close by who can assist you in an emergency, as well as “animal-proofing” your home to prevent possible injuries.
